Itzal sliced at the shadows all around them.

Nick scowled. Did he have some form of demon Parvo? Would make sense, given his frenetic attacks. “What’s he doing?”

“Shadow demons.” Bubba began slashing at the shadows, too.

Shadow demons? They kept using that term, and it took Nick a minute to figure out what they were actually facing, and why they were attacking them so viciously.

“You mean a shadowalker?”

Itzal nodded.

Nick’s heart stopped. They were one of the worst class of demons that straddled two worlds. With no loyalty whatsoever to anyone or anything. Morally ambiguous and capricious in the purest sense of those words, they were as likely to kill someone as to help them.

But they weren’t usually found here.

“How?” Nick asked.

Itzal gave him an irritated grimace. “Those who oversaw them are no longer here to wrangle them.”

Shadow … He must have been neutralized, too. Without him around to guard the shadow realm and keep it solid, the walls must have collapsed.

Dang. Out of control, morally ambiguous demons. Just what they needed.

The shadows moved over them, causing a harsh and horrible pain. Nick’s skin felt as if it were on fire, and that the fire was burning him all the way to his bones.

Kaziel howled. Aeron cursed as he did his best to battle them, too.

Nick had no idea how to fight them. How to stop the pain that kept getting worse. He might be a Malachai, but they could be wounded and severely hurt.

Neutralized.

Kody groaned in agony.

Nick crawled toward her so that he could help. Just as he reached her, she pulled out her mother’s sword. Like a lightsaber, the metal glowed so bright that it lit up the entire area around her.

And them.

He held his hand up to shield his eyes as the demons screamed and withdrew.

“Light…” Of course. They were shadows. Bright light would drive them away. It made sense that they wouldn’t be able to attack them in bright light.

I should have thought of that, especially given how dark it’s become.

But Kody was smarter than he was. Leave it to her to figure it out.

Caleb stood up first. “Everyone okay?”

“No. Kaziel’s hurt bad.” Vawn held a cloth to Kaziel’s side. It was already saturated with blood.

Itzal didn’t move.

Caleb went to his brother. “Itzzy?”

Itzal blinked slowly. “Did we survive?”

Nick met Caleb’s tormented gaze. He didn’t know what to say. Their group was mostly okay. Itzal not so much.

As if he knew how dire his situation was, Itzal looked down at his wounds. “Oh. That’s not good.”

“Don’t talk.” Caleb glanced around their group.

For all their collective powers, none of them had the ones that could heal.

Or save the demon’s life.

Itzal grimaced. “You have to get to Noir’s castle. What you’re looking for is in the back garden, protected by Noir’s pet. You can sneak in and…” His voice trailed off as his eyes turned dull.

“Itzzy?” Caleb shook him gently. “Itzzy, talk to me. Don’t you dare die like this!”

But it was too late. He was gone.

Nick didn’t know what to do. He’d never seen Caleb distraught.
